The Thing You Didn't Say

We all have moments that linger. A conversation that ended too soon. Words we wish we had said. Or maybe words we’re glad we didn’t.

Your challenge:
Write a scene centered around something left unsaid.
It could be:
  • A conversation that almost happened
  • A letter never sent
  • A secret someone is holding
  • A moment where silence says more than words
Keep it grounded in a specific moment. Let the tension live in what’s not spoken.
✍️ Optional Twist
  • The entire piece takes place in under 10 minutes
  • No dialogue tags (no “he said/she said”)
  • Include a meaningful object in the scene

📏 Guidelines
  • 300–1,000 words (flexible)
  • Any genre or style
  • Messy drafts welcome

One Small Decision

Sometimes it’s not the big moments that change everything. It’s the tiny ones. A yes instead of a no. A missed turn. A message sent… or deleted.

Your challenge:
Write a story where one small decision leads to unexpected consequences.

Start with something ordinary, then follow the ripple effect.
It could be:
  • A wrong turn that leads somewhere important
  • A split-second choice that changes a relationship
  • A seemingly minor action with major consequences
  • Two versions of what could have happened
✍️ Optional Twist
  • Show the before and after of the decision
  • Write it in reverse (start with the outcome)
  • Include a moment where the character almost chooses differently

📏 Guidelines
  • 300–1,000 words (flexible)
  • Any genre or style
  • Focus on cause and effect
